Details of the facelift Toyota has given the LandCruiser 70 Series utility have been leaked to a specialist four-wheel-drive magazine before its release later this month.
The mechanical details of the new model were leaked from New Zealand to 4X4 Australia magazine. A Toyota source says the Australian and New Zealand vehicles are almost identical. The figures show the new 4.5-litre, V8 turbo-diesel is more efficient than the 4.2-litre, six-cylinder turbo-diesel it replaces, despite a 24 per cent power increase from 122kW to 151kW. Fuel consumption drops by 0.2 litres/100km to 11.5L/100km and Australian versions are likely to have two petrol tanks, each holding 90 litres. The official torque figure for the new V8 is 430Nm, up from 380Nm for the six-cylinder. To fit the larger engine, Toyota has moved the front wheels further apart by 80mm. The ute has put on about 40kg and is longer, wider and lower than the current model. Equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels and a five-speed automatic gearbox. The ute still has leaf-spring rear suspension and is expected to retain disc brakes all round. Airbags are not available on any model.Towing capacity is unchanged at 3500kg.
